After having had just about every kind of guitar (both electric and acoustic) through the years, I've settled on using a Godin Multiac SA (both steel and nylon-string) through a Roland VG-88 then through a ART Tube MP preamp, then a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI for my solo gigs. Below, on the left, is a picture of me with one of my favorite guitars... my nylon-string Godin (circa 2002). The pic on the right is my "mongrel" Strat (circa 2007... geez, did I gray that much in 5 years?!)... a hard-tail... notice the 3 white on/off buttons for the pick-ups (EMG's)... thank you, Jim Messina for me showing this mod... now you can get any combination of pickup configurations (are you listening Fender?)... For the gear-heads, below that is a list of guitars and equipment I use for recording and performing live.

  • mongrel hard-tail Strat w/EMG's (my favorite... I made it from scratch with the help of my friend Tim Quertermous... luthier extraordinaire in Little Rock, AR (R.I.P.)... flame swamp ash... tung oil finish... the widest neck Warmouth makes (I've got fat fingers)... and extremely heavy... but geez does it sustain!

  • '56 Les Paul Gold Top Reissue (upgraded P-90 pickups to Lollar's)

  • "Partscaster" Tele. Mighty Mite swamp ash body, Seymour Duncan Hot Tele pickups, Warmouth neck, Gotoh chrome-plated brass bridge, Sperzel staggered post turners.... 9 lbs. 12 oz. heavy... tons of tone and  sustain!
  • Epiphone Casino with P-90 pickups

    • Fender MIM Stratocaster (low E string removed. Tuned to open G... can you say "Keefer"?)

  • Godin Multiac SA - steel string

  • Seagull acoustic w/Fishman pickup

  • Ovation acoustic/electric nylon-string (stereo output... way cool)

  • mongrel P-bass w/EMG's (have been a bass player as long as I have been an electric guitar player)

  • Fretless Fender Jazz Bass with Seymour Duncan pickups
  • 2 - Peavey Classic 30 amps (electric guitars)

  • PedalTrain pedalboard
  • Crate Acoustic 125D amp (acoustic guitars)

  • M-Audio Axiom 61 61-Key USB MIDI Controller

  • Cakewalk Sonor software

  • More sound module and effects plug-ins than I care to list

  • E-Mu 1818M PCMCIA card into souped-up Toshiba laptop

  • LINE 6 Back Track w/mic (for capturing ideas on the fly... wonderful tool!)

  • Event 20/20p studio monitors

  • ART Tube Pac preamp/compressor

  • Audio Technica AT4050 condenser mic (vocals and acoustic guitars)

  • Shure SM57 (studio miking amp)

  • Countryman Isomax wireless headset (live)

  • Roland VG-88

  • Fishman Aura Spectrum DI

  • Planet Waves Cable Station cables (they do make a difference)
